How does a laser distance measurer work? +
It fires a laser pulse at your target and measures the tiny time delay (and phase shift) of the reflected light. Because the speed of light is constant, that timing converts directly into a precise distance, shown on the screen almost instantly.
How accurate are they? +
Most reputable models are accurate to about ±1/16 in (±1.5 mm) — tighter than you can read a tape. Real-world error usually comes from tilting the tool or aiming at a glossy surface, not the laser itself.
What's the maximum range? +
Consumer models typically reach 100–165 ft; pro models go 200–330 ft. Indoors, 100 ft covers almost everything. Outdoors you'll want more range plus a way to see the dot in daylight.
Can I use one outdoors in bright sun? +
Yes, but the red dot can be hard to see in direct sunlight. Use a target plate where the beam lands, or choose a model with a digital camera viewfinder that shows the target on screen.
Do they work on glass, mirrors, or dark surfaces? +
Those surfaces scatter or absorb the beam and can give unstable readings. Tape a piece of paper or a target card where the dot lands to get a reliable measurement.
What's the difference between this and a laser level? +
A distance measurer tells you how far away something is (it replaces a tape measure). A laser level projects a straight reference line to align to (it replaces a spirit level). They do opposite jobs.
What do area, volume, and Pythagoras modes do? +
Area multiplies two measurements into square footage; volume multiplies three into cubic footage; Pythagoras calculates a height or distance you can't reach by combining two measurements you can take.
Are they hard to use? +
No. For most jobs you'll only use power, measure, and units. Press the tool flat against your starting point, aim, and click. Area and Pythagoras modes take a minute to learn.
Battery or rechargeable? +
Both exist. USB-C rechargeable models are the most convenient since you're never hunting for button cells. Either type lasts through long measuring sessions.
Is a laser distance measurer worth it? +
If you measure regularly — or ever work alone — yes. It's faster, more repeatable, and removes the errors that cause expensive mistakes like a miscut board or furniture that doesn't fit.
