How to Use a Laser Distance Measurer

A laser distance measurer looks intimidating with its row of buttons, but you’ll use about three of them 95% of the time. Here’s everything you actually need, in the order you’ll need it.
1. Take a single measurement
Press the power button to wake the unit, then aim the laser dot at your target — a wall, a ceiling, a fence. Press the measure button once. The distance from the base of the tool to the dot appears on screen. That reference point matters: most tools measure from their back edge by default, so you press the back of the unit flat against your starting surface.
If you’d rather measure from the front edge (handy when you can’t get behind the tool), change the reference point in the settings — there’s usually a small icon showing whether you’re measuring from the front, back, or a tripod thread.
2. Switch units
Tap the units button to cycle between feet-and-inches, decimal feet, and meters. Set it once and forget it. Working in fractions of an inch is where a laser really beats reading a tape.
3. Measure area and volume
This is the feature that pays for the tool.
- Area: select the area (square) mode, measure the length of a wall, then the width. The screen multiplies them and shows square footage. Perfect for flooring, paint, and tile estimates.
- Volume: select volume mode and take three measurements — length, width, height. You get cubic footage for things like concrete or HVAC sizing.
4. Continuous (tracking) mode
In continuous mode the reading updates live as you move. Use it to find a specific distance — walk the dot along a wall until it reads exactly 8 ft, then mark that spot. It’s the fastest way to lay out evenly spaced points.
5. The Pythagoras trick (measure what you can’t reach)
Need the height of a wall but can’t get the dot to the top and bottom from one spot? Pythagoras mode calculates the third side of a right triangle from two measurements you can take. Measure the direct (diagonal) distance to the top, then the horizontal distance to the base; the tool returns the vertical height. It’s how you measure a gable, a tall ceiling, or a window opening from the floor.
Tips for accurate readings
- Hold the tool steady and square to the target; a tilted dot adds error over distance.
- On glossy, glass, or very dark surfaces the beam can scatter — tape a piece of paper or a target card where the dot lands.
- Outdoors in daylight, the red dot can vanish. Use a target plate, or buy a model with a camera viewfinder.
- Let the tool reach room temperature if you’ve brought it in from the cold; condensation on the lens skews readings.
